n. & v. --n. 1 a road passing round a town or its centre to provide an alternative route for through traffic. 2 a a secondary channel or pipe etc. to allow a flow when the main one is closed or blocked. b an alternative passage for the circulation of blood during a surgical operation on the heart. --v.tr. 1 avoid; go round. 2 provide with a bypass.
